A Limarí river basin inventory has been elaborated and is available for project partners, water users as well as for the research and education community.
Objectives of the basin description:
Water use efficiency can only be achieved on the basis of significant data and well processed information which can be shared with a broad group of researchers and water users. This document has the aim to give an overview of the bio-physical, socio-economic and institutional environment of the Limarí Basin to promote further holistic water resources assessment and management.
There is still little knowledge and information available especially on
- hydrological processes in the Andean cordillera and hence runoff generation,
- detailed agricultural land use and changes over time in dependency of water resources availability
- the complex water distribution and management system in the basin, especially the operational rules during dry periods when water is scarce.
This basin description intends to provide an overview on the existing information and literature in order to be able to go beyond the existing knowledge and documentation and systematically approach future research.
Hydrological modelling of Andean subcatchments
In two headwater catchment areas in the Andes of an elevation of 2000m-5500m - Río Grande and Tascadero - the hydrological processes are investigated with different modelling approaches. Due to a lack of hydro-meteorological time series data in the Andes, hydrological processes have to be modelled and the results need to be validated with discharge and climate data of the downstream part as well as with snow cover Modis-satellite-data. The different approaches reveal a precipitation rate higher than 50% comparing to the weather station at 1250m elevation.
On the one hand, physical processes have been investigated with the distributed hydrological model WIMMED considering observations on geology, hydrogeology, vegetation, soils and snow dynamics. On the other hand, the water balance has been calculated within the conceptual model of HBV light.
For the validation of the model results in 2012 and 2013, five field campaigns have been carried out in the headwater catchments Río Grande and Tascadero. Stable isotopic values (O18 and 2H) and other geochemical tracers were sampled for validation of the results and the values of the climate station in Tascadero at an elevation of 3500masl were collected and evaluated.
Modelling of the water distribution in the irrigation system ACER
The water allocation model Mike Basin of DHI was established for the Recoleta in order to analyze and optimize the water distribution within the Recoleta irrigation system. The aim is to describe within the model the mechanisms of the water distribution in the ACER (Asociación de Canalistas del Embalse Recoleta) irrigation system to better estimate potential losses and to provide an optimized calculation of the available irrigation water. The model takes the dynamic water distribution in the Recoleta canals into consideration corresponding to the water rights. It calculates for every canal the prevailing rate of the total water amount.
